The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) is a national not-for-profit developed with the support of over 125 construction CEOs and association and academic leaders. NCCER develops standardized construction and maintenance curriculum and assessments with portable credentials. These credentials are tracked through NCCER’s Registry System that allows organizations and companies to track the qualifications of their craft professionals and/or check the qualifications of possible new hires. NCCER’s Registry System also assists craft professionals by maintaining their records in a secure database.

NCCER’s workforce development process of accreditation, instructor certification, standardized curriculum, registry, assessment and certification is a key component in the industry’s workforce development efforts.

NCCER’s Industrial Maintenance Electrical & Instrumentation program –

Industrial maintenance electrical and instrumentation (IM E&I) technicians are needed in every industry that uses machinery, from automotive assembly plants to computer manufacturers. Not only do they repair and maintain electrical instruments and equipment, they also install and dismantle them. Every time a new appliance leaves a factory or a new car rolls off the line, a skilled electrical and instrumentation technicians played a role in producing it.

The NCCER IM E&I program will start with NCCER Core:

• NCCER Core covers items such as Safety, Construction Math, Hand and Power Tools, Construction Drawings, Materials Handling, and Communication and Employability Skills.

• The 40-hour training is scheduled for August 14th – 18th at PDCCC’s Suffolk Campus.

• If you think you already have the NCCER Core skills and knowledge, you can sign up to take the “Challenge Tests” in July*. If you pass all of the modules of Core, you will earn the certification without having to take the class. If you do not pass a module, you will be scheduled for a day or more during August 14-18 to receive the instruction you need and retake the test.

• *The NCCER Core Challenge Tests are scheduled for 2-days (10-hours total) during the following dates: July 26, July 27, July 28, July 31, or August 1, from 4pm – 9pm.

• To register for NCCER Core, please call PDCCC’s Workforce Development (757) 569-6050 to schedule your Challenge Test dates or sign up for the 40-hour instructional program. The cost for both the Challenge Tests and instruction (if needed) is $1,098. Virginia residents 18 years of age and older can receive a discount and pay only $366 under the Workforce Credentials Grant. Other financial assistance will further reduce the tuition cost.

NCCER’s four-level IM E&I curriculum covers topics such as Fasteners and Anchors, Process Mathematics, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Controls, Process Control Loops, Instrument Calibration and Configuration, Electronic Components, Programmable Logic Controllers, and an introduction to the National Electrical Code, to name a few. Students can complete all 4 levels of IM E&I.

After a student completes Core, they will start the NCCER IM E&I Level Four certification on October 2, 2017 and will complete the 165-hour course by January 2018. Classes will be conducted on Mondays & Wednesdays from 3pm – 9pm at PDCCC’s Suffolk Campus.

A prospective student must provide the following to register for the program:

• Be 18 years of age
• Provide a copy of his/her high school diploma or GED
• Complete our Non-Credit Application for Admission.
• Complete our WCG/FANTIC Application to determine grant, financial aid, and scholarship eligibility (found on our Financial Assistance page).
